The cave, the night, the silence, the hesitation. Ancient instruments emerge from the depths, nocturnal words sound in quarter tones and overtones as in a primal human song. In this festival concert, the SWR Vokalensemble moves away from the usual in unusual lighting: vocally in the new composition by Mia Schmidt, in Michael Reudenbach’s isolated positioning and meticulous choreography of the fields, edges and surroundings, the title of the underlying book by Jürgen Becker. Hundreds of index cards take over the coordination here, each singer has their own timetable of miniatures, and yet there are connectionsor are we imagining them? What else: The new choral works are joined by two very first performances from the international project Global Breath by trumpeter Marco Blaauw. (Lydia Jeschke)
