Johannes Maria Staud’s work on ‘shattered reality’ was inspired by thoughts of the poet William Carlos Williams, who speaks of ‘dazzling’ reality and is ‘very obsessed with the space between events’.
The orchestral concert is often about such interstices: between events or between the real and the imaginary. Elena Mendoza does not want to give up the search for a different reality in the experience of wars and crises. ‘I imagine … an imaginary city made up of many fragments–a personal utopian place that you can’t stop looking for.
In today’s world, which suddenly feels dystopian due to the various crises, the idea of utopia has once again become vital to my survival.’
