Lachenmann Perspektiven VOL. 5–Double/Klangschatten

The films on Vol. 5

This DVD brings together recordings of two orchestral works by Helmut Lachenmann, composed at very different times, yet similar in their reduced instrumentation (strings and 3 concert grand pianos, or just strings): Klangschatten–mein Saitenspiel (1972) and Double (Grido II) (2004). We filmed Double in May 2016 with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, conducted by Peter Hirsch, with whom the composer has had a long-standing collaboration. From the multi-hour sectional rehearsals, two films were created (»Violin Sectional«/»Viola, Cello, Bass Sectional«), in which Lachenmann explains and demonstrates the relevant playing techniques in detail. We were only able to accompany the rehearsals for Klangschatten–mein Saitenspiel (SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, conducted by Pascal Rophé) for a few hours with the camera. Two shorter rehearsal films were created, which still provide a good insight into the piece, which Lachenmann regards as one of his »favourite pieces« among his own works.
