Lachenmann Perspektiven VOL. 3–Schwankungen am Rand

Vol. 3 of the 7-part DVD series »Lachenmann Perspectives« presents »Schwankungen am Rand. Musik für Blech und Saiten« (1974/75) in two interpretations.
As filmmaker Wiebke Pöpel explains: »We filmed Schwankungen am Rand twice–once under the direction of Emilio Pomàrico with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin (Radialsystem Berlin, January 2015), and once with Brad Lubman and the Ensemble Modern Orchestra (Frankfurt/Wiesbaden, November 2015). From the extensive rehearsal footage with the Ensemble Modern, three approximately 15-minute films were created. These are complemented by rehearsal scenes with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, in which Helmut Lachenmann explains not only the playing techniques but also piece-specific aspects such as the ‘inserts’ and the use of ‘packing’ or ‘back paper’. The rehearsals were conducted partly in German, partly in English–the German-language passages are subtitled in English in the films.

The concert recording shows the performance in Berlin, which was particularly convincing due to the spatial arrangement in the Radialsystem.«
