Lachenmann Perspektiven VOL. 1–Accanto

In 2015/16, filmmaker Wiebke Pöpel travelled across Europe together with cameraman Michael Zimmer to a total of nine concert preparation phases with various orchestras that were rehearsing orchestral works by Helmut Lachenmann as part of the ‘Lachenmann Perspectives’ project. The composer himself accompanied all the rehearsals.

Vol. 1 of the 7-part DVD series »Lachenmann Perspektiven« is dedicated to the orchestral piece Accanto, composed by Helmut Lachenmann in 1975/76. The present DVD documents the rehearsals for a concert by the Philharmonie Zuidnederland in Eindhoven and ’s-Hertogenbosch in November 2015, featuring the string-reduced version from 2005.

The filmmaker Wiebke Pöpel recorded ten hours of rehearsal footage, from which six predominantly English-language films focusing on the individual instruments (or instrument groups) were created.

The DVD booklet includes a detailed description of the entire project, a brief report by filmmaker Wiebke Pöpel, an extensive work description by Helmut Lachenmann, and biographical information about the performers.
